Dealing with Pollution

While you are in Mexico City, you may experience some bad reactions to pollution.

Fortunately, most pharmacies have over the counter items meant to combat the effects of pollution.

Eye irritation from pollution:

A really common reaction to pollution is sore eyes or itchiness or heaviness of your eye lids. It feels like you have beginnings of pink eye—this is irritation caused by airborne dirt getting into your eyes.

In Mexico City, look for a product called “Nazil x Contaminacion.” The box has a cityscape and smog on it, indicating it is for pollution. These are the specific eye drops you need to use if your eyes are reacting to the pollution.

Nasal Irritation from Pollution:

Nasal irritation is common. You'll notice that sometimes when you blow your nose, what looks like dirt comes out. This is pollution you have inhaled coming out of your nose. I recommend a product called Sterimar, which is a sterile nose spray. Make sure you get the adult ones in the large box, the little boxes are for kids.

To use, spray into one nostril at a time (it is an aerosol product), while gently inhaling through the nose. After each spray, blow your nose to clear out the saline solution and dirt it has dissolved.

Ways to reduce reactions to pollution:

  • Make sure you wash your hair properly every single night.

  • Make sure to you wash your beard, as it will trap pollution near your mouth and nose.

  • Pollution can get caught in your eyelashes and in your eyebrows, so make sure to properly wash your face, including eye area, every single day.

  • If you have a deck at your AirBNB, make sure to rinse it off with a hose, if possible. If you are in a place that has a deck, or an outdoor space, you might notice that there is dust everywhere. That's the pollution settling on surfaces. In fact, it's common after a heavy rain to a layer of dirt everywhere in the city. That's the pollution in the sky washing out through the rain.

  • Pollution tends to be lower on times when people have left the city for the holidays. Easter is well-known as being a low-pollution time because people leave to go to visit family out of town.
