You will see prices written in different ways in Mexico City. The peso, like the US dollar, can be written with a “$” symbol. Prices may be written with $, M$, or MXN—all mean price in pesos. There are approximately 20 pesos to a US dollar. That means 200 pesos is approximately $10. The easiest way to remember how to translate the money is take the amount in pesos, remove a zero (same as go back one decimal place), and cut the number in half. That's how many dollars it is.

Explanation of quick mental conversion:

1000 Pesos

-Remove a zero (aka: go back one decimal place)

becomes 100.

-Divide that in half (100/2 = 50)

You have $50.
